This 12 days trekking experience is a wonderful connection of trails that allows travelers to hike in the famous Tamang heritage trail which was restricted until 2004 and also in the Langtang Valley trek that takes us towards the gigantic mountains which borders Nepal and China. This region is well known for its Tibetan lifestyles which the locals are still trying their best to preserve. Throughout our trek we will be welcomed by the beautiful Himalayan scenes of Langtang Himal, Ganesh Himal, Jugal Himal and Mount Mansalu which is one of the mountains above 8,000 meters. This trek is a perfect destination for people seeking for peaceful trekking experience without much crowd of people. Tamang Heritage and Langtang Valley Trek is one of the best combinations of mountain and the Himalayan culture exploration in langtang region. Langtang region is a home to both heavenly mountains as well as the rich cultural heritage of ethnic tamang local people. 

Tamang Heritage with Langtang Valley Trekking begin with a Jeep or Bus ride from Kathmandu towards North. From Syabrubesi, we enter the Tamang heritage trail that climbs towards Gatlang. Before reaching Gatlang we will see many Buddhist Chortens and Mani walls along the way. The trail after Gatlang descends along the ridge to Bamdang River where we cross a suspension bridge and a 450 meters uphill climb waits in front of us. We spend a night in settlement at Tatopani from where the trail passes through Rhododendron forests where we might see some wildlife as well. After passing the villages at Thuman and Bridim we join the Langtang Valley trekking trail at Lama Hotel from where we continue our trek towards Kyangjin Gompa via Ghoda Tabela and Langtang village. After reaching Kyangjin Gompa we have options of day hikes to Kyanjin Ri, Tsergo Ri and Langshisha Kharka. The view of Kyangjin Gompa is just breathtaking as this ancient Tibetan village is located at the lap of dazzling mountains surrounding the area. The trek ends at Syabrubesi from where we return back to Kathmandu or move towards next destination as per the itinerary.

Langtang valley trail follows the river upstream through forest of pine, bamboo and rhododendron, uphill through pastures to arrive at the alpine meadows of Kyanjin Gompa where you will get exceptional mountain view just a stone’s throw from the Tibetan Boarder. The forest around Ghode Tabela in the below Langtang Valley and lower the Gosainkund Lakes are inhabited by the very shy red panda, a rare and endangered symbol of a healthy Himalayan ecosystem. Other animals, common to these forests are yellow throated martens, wild boar, Himalayan black bear, Ghoral (Mountain Goat), grey langur monkey and leopard. Along the route, we definatly enjoy panoramic mountain views. Beside the mountain views, we explore a local fort, monastery and exquisite local architecture of the Tamang homes. As we near the end of the trek we enjoy a home stay experience in Briddim and have a full day to relax and discover more about the local traditions of this wonderful region. we will experience welcoming and culturally rich Tamang people and their religious practices, language and dress are very similar to those of Tibet than to traditions of their cousins in the middle hills. The area is famous for its pleasant local, unique tradition, Buddhist monasteries and monuments along the way.

Tamang Heritage and Langtang Valley Trek - 12 Days Detailed Itinerary

Day 1

Drive from Kathmandu (1400m / 4,393ft) to Syabrubesi (1,503m / 4,655ft), Distance: (122 km /75.8 miles), 7- 9 hrs drive.

After an early breakfast, your journey begins with a drive from kathmandu to Syabrubesi. The highway heads north from kathmandu through the beautiful Nepalese countryside, which will take about seven to eight hours. As the road follows the Trishuli river, you will catch glimpses of Ganesh Himal and never-ending green hills. The path takes you to a busy town called Dhunche and continuing forward, you will arrive at Syabrubesi. Overnight in local mountain lodge.

Day 2

Trek from Syabrubesi (1,503m / 4,655ft) to Gatlang (2,240m / 7,355ft), Distance 12.1km / 7.4miles, 5-6 hrs walk.

Our day will start after early breakfast. After two to three hours of ascent from Syabrubesi on steep trail, we will reach Ronga Bhanjyang. On the route, you will stop by viewpoints that provide fantastic views of Ganesh Himal, the Gosaikunda range, and the Goljang valley. We head down to Goljang valley (lunch stop) which is an hour walking down hill from our view point. Then, you will trek for three more hours to reach Gatlang - the beautiful, traditional Tamang village. Today we walk through many villages and along the trails there are numerous Buddhist chortens and mani walls. You can visit the Parbati Kund and an ancient monastery at Gatlang. Gatlang is a beautiful Tamang village that is set high on a hillside among terraced fields. Stay overnight in lodge or home.

Day 3

Trek from Gatlang (2,240m / 7,355ft) to Tatopani (2,610m / 8,565ft), Distance: 12.2km / 7.6miles, 5-6 hrs walk.

After breakfast, you will start by descending to Thangbuchet, near Chilime village by the Bhotekoshi River where Chilime Hydropower dam is situated. En-route, passing many Chortens, mani walls, and the deep forests until you reach Chilime. It takes abouts two and a half hours. Then you will cross a suspension bridge and climb past the terrace fields to reach Gonggang Village, which takes about one and half hours. You will have lunch at Gonggang, and after lunch, you will follow a gently ascending path to reach Tatopani, means ´hot water'. Locals believe that the waters have a healing quality that eases away your aches and pains. Stay overnight in lodge.

Day 4

Trek from Tatopani (2,610m / 8,565ft) to Thuman (2,340m / 7,665ft) via Nagthali (3,170m / 10,395ft), Distance: 9.2km / 5.7miles, 5-6 hrs walk.

After early breakfast, we start our day trekking through the forests and dense jungles, slowly gaining elevation while passing several ups and downs. After hiking for about two hours, you will reach Brimdang. Climb to Nagthali for about 2 hours, which is at the height of 3165 m. It was once used as a popular meditation center for the local monks and priests. You will be having lunch at Nagthali, enjoying the views of Langtang Lirung (7,227m), Shishapangma (8,013m), Ganesh Himal (7,422m), Tibetan Himal, and other snowy peaks. There are small monasteries for us to visit and If we are lucky, we might come across large troops of Nepal Gray Langur Monkeys. You will then continue down to Thuman, a heavily Tibetan influenced Tamang village. Stay overnight in lodge.

Day 5

Trek from Thuman (2,340m / 7,665ft) to Briddim (2,230m / 7,320ft), Distance: 14km / 8.6miles, 5-6 hrs walk.

The destination for today lies across the valley on the other side of the Bhote Koshi River. The first section of the trekking path has a flatter section and then descends to Timure on the way along the old trade route to Tibet, and we stop at Timure for lunch. Rasuwaghadi, an ancient fort at the Nepal-Tibet border, is just a 3-hour walk from Timure. After lunch, the trail takes a steep ascent to Briddim, another Tibetan-influenced Tamang village. Briddim is another Tibetan-influenced Tamang community located in the bosom of the Langtang Himal, where we stay in a local home for a traditionally unique experience.

Day 6

Trek from Briddim (2,230m / 7,320ft) to Lama Hotel (2,470m / 8,103ft), Distance: 9.7 km /6 miles, 6-7 hrs walk.

After breakfast from Briddim, you will trek to Lama Hotel. Continuing along with Langtang, a very popular Sherpa village (Sherpa Gau) visit a popular ethnic group of Nepal. Crossing a couple of interesting villages and parts of the jungle of Langtang National Park full of rhododendron, we will slowly hike up and up toward Lama Hotel. You can have a crystal clear view of Langtang Himal depending upon the condition of the weather, as well as you might have the chance to spot rare local wildlife like the red pandas. As you continue, you will eventually reach Lama Hotel, where we will stay for the night.

Day 7

Trek from Lama Hotel (2,470m / 8,103ft) to Langtang village (3,430m / 11,255ft), Distance 14.8km / 9.1miles, about 5-6 hrs walk.

Your day starts with an early morning breakfast. After breakfast, you will trek along the river valley through a lush landscape, slowly ascending while enjoying the views of snowy peaks. The river valley suddenly becomes broad at Ghoda Tabela (3,030 m). Ghoda Tabela literally means "the Horse Stable" in English. In the past, there was a Tibetan resettlement project running in this region, but now there is an army checkpoint, and we'll be registering our permits at Ghoda Tabela. The trail is slightly gradual further past Chymki Village (3,230 m) on a trail adorned with prayer flags and beautiful in the valley with the grazing yaks.  After some time ascending, you will see prayer wheels, mani walls, water mills, and chortens, and these monuments indicate that Langtang, a large Tamang village, is nearby. Stay overnight in the lodge.

Day 8

Trek from Langtang Village (3,430m / 11,255ft) to Kyanjin Gompa (3,865m / 12,675ft), Distance: 6.8km / 4.2miles, 3-4 hrs walk.

After a good cup of tea and breakfast, you will start on the trails. Today's trek will be short and exciting through the tiny village, stone-built houses and climb to a Chorten and pass a huge mani along a gentle path of a hill. Since your path will be ascending, you will trek slowly to provide your body enough time for acclimatization.

Soon after, you will come across water mills, prayer wheels, and sacred mounds of rocks with inscriptions on them. It indicates that we have arrived at the ancient monastery of the Kyanjin Gompa. Kyanjin Gompa is a wonderful village in the Langtang region and sits surrounded by the stunning Himalayas. You have a chance to test cheese and curd by Yak milk. Stay overnight in the beautiful Kyanjin village, in the lap of Mount Langtang Lirung and other peaks.

Day 9

Exploration day at Kyanjin Gompa

Today, you will be acclimatizing while exploring this beautiful village. This area of the valley has so much to offer for trekkers. Because of the higher elevation, you will get stunning views of the Himalayan ranges and glaciers. Kyangjin Gompa provides various venues worth seeing. You can visit the monastery and the cheese factory or you can also take optional hikes to Langshisa Kharka, or ascend Kyangjin Ri (4350m) and Tserko Ri (4985m), which is highest point of this trek, directly behind the village. From this viewpoint, you can observe peaks like Langtang Lirung (7,227m), Langtang II (6,586m), and many more. As the sun starts to set, you will return to Kyanjin Gompa to spend the night.

Day 10

Trek from Kyanjin Gompa (3,865m / 12,675ft) back to Lama Hotel (2,380m / 7808ft), Distance: 21km / 13 miles)

From Kyangjin Gompa, we admire the last glimpses of the beautiful mountains, standing tall and proud, and then head out of the valley. The trail descends down passing the yak pastureland until reaching Langtang which takes about 2 hours then continue walk and cross the suspension bridge and climb down till Thangshyap. It takes about 1 hour. After the leisurely lunch, we continue down through the dense forests of the river valley to Lama Hotel.

Day 11

Trek back from Lama Hotel (2,380m / 7808ft) to Syabrubensi (1,503m / 4,655ft), Distance: 11.3km / 7miles, 5-6 hrs walk.

Today will be the final trekking day as we head to Syabrubensi. From Sybrubensi, we will drive back to Kathmandu. You will walk along the Langtang river, heading downwards. While descending through bamboo and birch forests, you will get stunning landscape views. After crossing the Langtang and the Bhote Koshi rivers, you will arrive at Syabrubensi- the town from where we started the trek. You will be driving to Kathmandu the following morning. Stay overnight in a mountain lodge.

Day 12

Drive from Syabrubensi (1,420m / 4,655ft) to Kathmandu (1400m / 4,393ft), Distance: (122km / 75.8miles) , 7-8 hrs drive.

After breakfast, we will drive from Syabrubensi to Kathmandu, which will take about seven to nine hours. During this drive, you can enjoy scenic views of the Trishuli River Valley. As the bus heads southwards, you will see the terraced farmlands, meadows, and final glimpses of the snow-capped mountains. Once you arrive at Kathmandu, your trek ends. Essential Information

Permits required for Tamang Heritage and Langtang Valley Trek

You need to obtain two different types of permits to enter the Langtang region. Trekking Plus Team will provide you with the service of hassle-free obtaining procedure of permits for your convenience.

TIMS Card (Trekkers Information Management System) is the most necessary permit to enter any trekking route in Nepal. The TIMS is to keep track of trekkers, ensure their safety, and support search and rescue operations in case of emergencies. Trekking Plus obtain a TIMS card in Kathmandu once you booke your trekking package with us.

Another permit is Langtang National Park entry permit to enter the premises of Langtang National Park. Upon your arrival at Dunche, the officials will help you obtain the National Park Permit or we can also get it from kathmandu before the trek start.

Accommodations During Tamang Heritage and Langtang Valley Trek

Accommodations on the Tamang Heritage and Langtang Valley Trek are generally basic mountain teahouses or lodges. Basic nice and clean mountain lodges but don't expect luxurious amenities. Rooms are often simple with twin beds and shared bathrooms. In some places, you might find hot showers for an extra fee.

Food Availability During Tamang Heritage and Langtang Valley Trek

Tea houses and lodges along the trekking route serve a variety of meals, including both local and international dishes. The food is usually basic but nourishing to revitalize your energy for the following day. You can expect options like local food such as dal bhat (rice and lentils), traditional dishes prepared from maize, rice, and barley, noodles, pasta, and some Western-style dishes. The quality of food can vary from lodge to lodge. Breakfast and the dinner is served at where you stay overnight. For lunch at the teahouses and lodges where you can take breaks in the day time.

Drinking Water Facility During Tamang Heritage and Langtang Valley Trek

Staying properly hydrated is essential for your well-being, especially at higher altitudes. While trekking in the Tamang Heritage and Langtang Valley, you can access drinking water from natural sources, lodges, and teahouses. Throughout the trek, you'll find numerous streams, rivers, and natural water sources along the trail. While this water is generally safe to drink, we recommend using water purification tablets to treat it before consumption to avoid the risk of waterborne illnesses. You can fill your water bottle at the lodges and refill it at the lunch places. Drinking water available in the teahouses and guesthouses is very clean but if you want boiled water, the teahouses can ask for a fee.
