If you are looking for a day hike near Kathmandu valley to escape this hustle and bustle, Nagarkot Changunarayan Day Hike is a rewarding choice. We can see the spectacular sunrise over the Himalayan ranges from the popular vantage point and magnificent views of Himalayas; Mt. Everest, Annapurna, Manaslu, Ganesh Himal, Langtang and other numerous peaks. Elevating at the 2195m, the hills afford the views of entire Kathmandu valley and Shivapuri National park clearly. After the breakfast, short day hiking to the ancient Hindu temple located at the top hill, Changunarayan Temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. Enlisted in UNESCO world’s heritage Changunarayan is one of the oldest temple as well the masterpieces architecture of Nepal. The main highlights of this hike are the fascinating trail which passes through lush pine forests, terraced fields, ethnic Tamang and Newar village with typical countryside houses painted with locally found ocher. Taste the local wines made by Newari people on the way and immerse yourself in their cultures and traditions.
The hiking trail gradually descends through the terraced fields. The first part of the hike involves an amazing cultural encounter of ethnic villages, unaffected by the nearby capital city. While the second part is witnessing beautiful nature along the ridge rich in deciduous forests and sceneries of Majestic Himalayas. This hike is the best option if you are looking for an easy hiking in Kathmandu for a day. The ending point is a UNESCO world heritage listed pagoda temple 'Changu Narayan', one of the oldest temples built by Lichhavi rulers in the 7th Century. We explore this ancient temple spending about an hour and finally drive back to Kathmandu.
IMPORTANT REMINDERS
- Nagarkot offers one of the best sunrise views along the panoramic Himalayas so It will be better if you reach there as earlier as possible.
- We will have breakfast in Nagarkot and start our hike to Changunarayan at around 8:00 AM.
- Bring a camera and gear up in warm clothing
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
- The hotel pick up time in Kathmandu - your guide will receive you from the hotel early in the morning (4:45 AM) and we begin our drive for Nagarkot.
- Hotel pickup & drop-off (for Kathmandu City hotels only but additional charges apply for accommodations outside the city)
- If you don’t want the sunrise view you can start the trip from 9:00 AM. It will take 45 minutes to reach Nagarkot from Kathmandu as it is 30 KM away from the city (Thamel).
