Day 1

Flying from Kathmandu to Paro (Bhutan)

Fly to Paro is one of the most spectacular of all mountain flights. Whether flying along the Himalayan range from Kathmandu or over the foothills, each flight is a mesmerizing feat and offers exciting descent into the Kingdom. On arrival at the airport, received by our representative and then transfer to Thimphu, the modern capital town of Bhutan.

Day 2

After breakfast, sightseeing around Thimphu

Visit Trashichhoedzong, the beautiful medieval fortress/monastery which houses most of the Government’s office and King’s Throne room It is also the summer residence of Je Khenpo, the Chief Abbot. Then visit the National Library which has a vast collection of ancient Buddhist texts and manuscripts. After that drive to Arts & Crafts School, famous for traditional thangka paintings. Here you will see, students at work producing the intricate design on cloth. After lunch visits Handicrafts Emporium which displays the wide assortment of beautifully hand-woven and crafted products. Then drive to Memorial Chorten, the stupa built in the memory of Bhutan’s Third King who is popularly regarded as Father of modern Bhutan. The paintings and statues inside this monument provide a deep insight into Buddhist philosophy. Overnight at the hotel in Thimphu.

Day 3

Drive from Thimphu to Punakha ( 75 Km, 3 Hours )

After breakfast drive to Punakha with a short stop at Dochula pass (3,080m) stopping briefly here to take in the view and admire the chorten, mani wall, and prayer flags which decorate the highest point on the road. If skies are clear, the following peaks can be seen from this pass (left to right): Masagang (7,158m), Tsendagang (6,960m), Terigang (7,060m ), Jejegangphugang (7,158 m ), Kangphugang (7,170 m ), Zongphugang (7, 060 m ), a table mountain that dominates the isolated region of Lunana – finally Gangkar plenum, the highest peak in Bhutan at 7,497m. Later visit Punakha Dzong, built strategically at the junction of Pho Chhu and Mo Chhu rivers in 1637 by Shabdrung Ngawang Namgyal to serve as the religious and administrative centre of the region, Punakha Dzong has played an important role in Bhutan’s history. Damaged by four catastrophic fires and an earthquake, the Dzong has now been fully restored. After that drive to Wangduephodrang visiting Dzong and the local market. The district of Wangduephodrang is also famous for its bamboo products, slate and stone carvings. Overnight at the hotel in Punakha.

Day 4

Drive from Punakha to Paro (125 Km, 4 Hours)

After breakfast drive to Paro en route visit Simtokha Dzong, the oldest fortress of the Kingdom built in 1627, it now houses the School for religious studies. Afternoon in Paro visits Ta Dzong, the National Museum of the Kingdom. Originally built as Watch Tower since 1967 it is serving as the National Museum of the country and holding the fascinating collection of art, artefacts, thangka paintings, and Bhutan’s exquisite postage stamps. Afterwards, walk down a hillside trail to visit Rinpung Dzong. Built-in 1646 by Shabdrung Ngawang Namgyal, the first spiritual and temporal ruler of Bhutan, the Dzong houses the monastic body of Paro, the office of the Dzongda (district administrative head) and Thrimpon (judge) of Paro district. Overnight at the hotel in Paro.

Day 5

Full day sightseeing in Paro.

After breakfast drive north of Paro valley to ruins of Drukgyel Dzong. From this fort, Bhutanese repelled several invasions by Tibetan armies. Nearby visit traditional Bhutanese Farm House which offers good insight into the lifestyle of local people. Then take an excursion to Taktsang Monastery, the most famous of Bhutanese monasteries. It is said that Guru Rinpoche arrived here on the back of a tigress and meditated at this monastery hence it is called “Tiger’s Nest”. The excursion to monastery takes about 5 hours for a round trip. While the return to Paro town visits en route Kyichu Lhakhang, one of the oldest and most sacred shrines of the Kingdom. Overnight at the hotel in Paro.

Day 6

Departure from Paro

Thimphu

Thimphu is the capital city of Bhutan and there are several sites to visit which give an insight into the culture, history, and art of Bhutan. Tashichho Dzong is one of the most important ones as it houses the throne room and office of the king, secretariat building, and central monk body. Important festivals like Tsechu are hosted in these dzongs.

Another gem in this city is the National Library which holds a huge collection of ancient Buddhist texts. A visit to Arts and Crafts School lets you know about the process behind beautiful Thangka paintings. Memorial Chorten is considered the most visible religious structure in the city. It was built in the memory of the late King Jigme Dorji Wangchuck where several larger-than-life-sized images of tantric deities are kept.

Dochula Pass

It is the highest point on the road to Punakha at a height of 3080 meters. It is decorated by mani walls, prayer flags and a Chorten. On a clear day, mountains like Masagang (7,158m), Tsendagang (6,960m), Terigang (7,060m ), Jejegangphugang (7,158 m), Kangphugang (7,170 m), Zongphugang (7,060 m) can be seen including a table mountain and Gangkar Puensum.

Punakha Dzong

The major attraction of Punakha is the Punakha Dzong, built at the junction of Pho Chhu and Mo Chhu rivers. Its major function is to hold administrative and religious activities in the Punakha district. There are several sacred relics of Tibetan Buddhism and the remains of Ngawang Namgyal who also built this dzong. This dzong has lots of religious and historical importance and is also the second biggest and second oldest dzong in Bhutan.

Wangdue Phodrang and Simtokha Dzong
Wangdue Phodrang is famous for its dzong and local market. Several handicrafts, art pieces, statues, and other souvenirs can be bought from here. Simtokha Dzong is the oldest the biggest dzong in this Himalayan Kingdom of Bhutan. This old fortress is now used as a school for religious and linguistic studies.

Paro

The National Museum in Paro is also known as Ta-Dzong. It was built as a watchtower but now it’s used as a museum where the best art pieces, statues, Thangka paintings, and other artifacts are kept. There are about three thousand artworks there today. This museum is a major tourist attraction in Bhutan showcasing the culture, history, and art of Bhutan. Rinpung Dzong is another important place to visit that holds the monastic body, the office of the district administrative head, and the judge of Paro. The ruins of Drukgyel Dzong lie north of Paro which is considered the most beautiful archaeological site in Bhutan.

Tiger’s Nest Monastery

Another major attraction of Paro is the Tiger’s Nest Monastery, also known as Paro Taktsang. According to a legend, Guru Padmasambhava came to the cave to meditate on the back of a tigress. It is also believed that the tigress was one of his disciples in Tibet. He is also the one who brought Buddhism into Bhutan. Today, the temple lies on a sheer cliff. One can reach there only by hiking or on the back of a horse. It is also an amazing viewpoint to watch the beautiful views of the city.

People and Culture

People in Bhutan follow Vajrayana Buddhism. Representations of it, including monasteries, chortens, etc. dominate the cityscapes of Bhutan. Several exotic festivals that involve dressing up and music are celebrated by these people. Monks can be seen in red robes while men and women are seen in Gho and Kira.
