Is the Everest Base Camp Trek Right for You?

The Everest Base Camp Trek is considered moderate to challenging, depending on your trekking experience. If you’ve done high-altitude treks like Annapurna Base Camp, Poon Hill, or Langtang Valley, that experience will definitely help. But even if you’re a first-time trekker, you can still successfully complete this trek with the right preparation, guidance, and acclimatization.

Proper preparation is key to a successful trek. We recommend starting your training at least one month in advance. Since you'll be reaching altitudes above 5,000 meters and walking around 7 hours a day, both your physical stamina and mental resilience should be in good shape. You'll also need to carry your essentials during the trek. If you’re not hiring a porter, make sure you’re physically fit enough to manage your backpack. Hiring a porter can make your journey much easier and more enjoyable.

Best Time to Do the Everest Base Camp Trek

Nepal’s two main trekking seasons are spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November). These months offer the best weather and visibility. You can reach Lukla by flight or choose a helicopter or mountain flight for a more scenic experience.

Trekking is also possible during the off-season, when the trail is quieter. However, during the monsoon season (June–August), landslides and limited visibility can make travel risky. In winter (December–February), you’ll face freezing temperatures—sometimes as low as -15°C—but you’ll also enjoy crystal-clear mountain views and peaceful trails, if you’re well-prepared for the cold.

  • Choosing Trekking Plus means trekking with confidence. We offer:
  • A professional local team with over a decade of experience

When is the best Time to Trek to Everest Base Camp ?

Trekking to Everest Base Camp is becoming so popular trek compare with other commercial trekking route in Nepal. While the trail is open year round, winter and monsoon seasons see fewer trekkers. The best times for the trek are during autumn and spring in the Khumbu region.

The ideal months are pre-monsoon (February to May) and post-monsoon (September to December). During these months, the weather is generally stable, visibility is excellent, and temperatures are favorable for trekking in the Himalayas. Along the route to Everest Base Camp, you'll enjoy breathtaking mountain views that are particularly clear during this time.

Essential Information

Alternative Route Options (Jeep, Flight, Helicopter)

Besides the regular flight to Lukla, you can also choose other ways to start your Everest Base Camp Trek. One option is to drive from Kathmandu to Salleri by local jeep, which takes about 9 to 10 hours. After staying overnight in Salleri, you’ll take another jeep to Tham Danda, which takes 6 to 7 hours on rough mountain roads. From there, your trek begins with a 4 to 5 hour walk to Paiya, where you’ll stay at a tea house. The next day, you’ll continue your trek from Paiya to Phakding, which takes around 6 to 7 hours.

Another option is a helicopter ride. You can fly from Kathmandu to Lukla and back on a sharing basis with up to five people, which costs around USD 500 to 700 per person. There’s also an option to take a direct helicopter from Everest Base Camp or Gorak Shep to Kathmandu. The cost for a shared ride is around USD 1600 and USD 5500 for a private flight.

Please keep in mind that all flights and helicopter rides depend on the weather in both Kathmandu and Lukla. There may be delays or cancellations. We kindly ask for your patience and understanding in such cases.

Trek Difficulty

The Everest Base Camp Trek is considered moderate to challenging. If you already have high-altitude trekking experience, you might find it manageable. But for first-time trekkers, it can be more difficult. Physical preparation and mental strength are both important. That’s why our itinerary includes proper acclimatization days to support your health and comfort throughout the journey.

Training and Preparation

To make your trek more enjoyable and easier, it is highly recommended to train at least 4 to 5 weeks before the trip. This helps you build the stamina you’ll need to walk several hours each day at high altitude while carrying your backpack. Cardiovascular exercises such as walking, running, cycling, or hiking are very helpful.

Arrival and Departure

When you arrive in Kathmandu, a representative from our company will meet you at the airport holding a sign with your name. You’ll be transferred to your hotel in a private car. For your departure, our staff will also assist you at the airport and make sure you reach there on time based on your flight schedule.

End of Trek Travel Information

If you're flying from Lukla to Kathmandu at the end of your trek, the flight is about 30 minutes long and usually arrives by 10 a.m. Sometimes flights operate from Lukla to Manthali instead. In that case, the flight still takes 30 minutes, followed by a 5 to 6 hour drive to Kathmandu. Since weather conditions in Lukla can cause delays or cancellations, we suggest adding at least one extra day after your trek before booking your international flight. Having a buffer day gives you more flexibility and helps avoid unnecessary stress.

Accommodation During the Trek

During your trek, you’ll stay in standard mountain lodges or tea houses. In Lukla, Phakding, and Namche Bazaar, rooms with attached bathrooms are available. In other areas, you’ll stay in basic twin-sharing rooms. All lodges are clean and provide a cozy place to rest.

Meals During the Trek

You’ll be served breakfast, lunch, and dinner each day. At high altitudes, food choices may be limited, but you’ll find a mix of Nepali and Western options. Dal Bhat (rice, lentils, and vegetables) is a nutritious and filling local meal. Please let us know about any food allergies or dietary restrictions in advance. We also recommend drinking plenty of fluids like garlic soup, ginger tea, Thukpa (noodle soup), and Sherpa stew. Avoiding meat and dairy is a good idea, as they can be hard to digest at high altitude.

Water and Electricity

You can get free cold drinking water along the trail, but you’ll need to pay for hot or bottled water. Hot showers are available at an extra cost. Electricity is provided by a hydro plant up to Namche Bazaar and by solar power after that. Charging your devices may cost a small fee.

Communication on the Trail

Wi-Fi is available at most tea houses for a small charge. In some places, there’s also Everest Link Wi-Fi. Mobile signals work in some areas but become weaker after Dingboche. Our guides stay in contact with the Kathmandu office every day for updates and emergencies.

Weather Conditions

In winter, daytime temperatures can drop between -8 to -15°C, and at night it can go as low as -25°C. The skies are usually clear, offering great mountain views despite the cold. Spring is one of the best times to trek. Temperatures are a bit warmer, and the skies remain mostly clear. Summer is the monsoon season with heavy rainfall and muddy trails, making it less ideal. Autumn is another popular trekking season with clear skies, dry weather, and excellent visibility.

Guides for the Trek

Solo trekking is not allowed in Nepal’s national parks. You must have a registered guide. With Alpine Ramble Treks, you’ll be accompanied by a certified and experienced guide who will take care of your safety, help with logistics, and make sure your trek goes smoothly.

Porters and Luggage

You can hire a porter to carry your main backpack. Porters carry up to 24 kg. We provide you with a duffel bag for your trek, and your regular suitcase can be safely stored at your hotel in Kathmandu for free.

Safety and Emergency Support

Tipping and Appreciation

Tipping is a nice way to show your appreciation to your guide and porter. Though not required, a general guideline is to tip about 10–15% of the total trip cost to your porter and 15–20% to your guide. You can tip individually or as a group. Even a kind word or a handshake means a lot to our team.

Trek Distance

The total distance from Lukla to Everest Base Camp and back is about 124 kilometers or 78 miles. That means you’ll walk roughly 9 to 15 kilometers each day over 12 to 14 days. This is manageable with steady walking and rest.

A Typical Day on the Trail

Each day starts with breakfast between 6:30 and 7:30 a.m., lunch is usually between 1 and 2 p.m., and dinner is served between 6 and 7 p.m. On average, you’ll trek for about 7 hours each day. There will be breaks to rest, take photos, and enjoy the scenery. Your guide or porter can also help take pictures for you.

What to Pack

Packing wisely makes a big difference. Bring layered clothing for cold weather, a warm sleeping bag, a rain jacket, and a good pair of trekking shoes. Also carry personal items like toiletries, sunscreen, wet wipes, and any medications. We’ll check your gear before the trek and help you prepare.

Travel Insurance Requirements

You must have travel insurance before joining the trek. Your insurance should include emergency helicopter rescue, medical treatment, and coverage up to 6,000 meters. Be sure to purchase this from your home country before traveling to Nepal.

Where is Manthali (Ramechhap)?

Manthali, also called Ramechhap, is about 177 kilometers from Kathmandu. During the peak trekking season, flights to Lukla often operate from this airport. You can get there by private car or minibus.
