Are you looking for an old or a traditional adventurous route to Everest Base Camp? Trekking Plus proudly presents the Classic Everest Base Camp Trek, a journey along the original trail used by early explorers of Mount Everest. Instead of taking a flight from Kathmandu to Lukla, this trek begins with a scenic 7–8 hour drive to Jiri, the historical starting point of the Everest expedition route. From Jiri, your trek takes you through the heart of the Solu-Khumbu region, allowing you to immerse yourself in the authentic Himalayan culture and landscapes.

The route from Jiri to Everest Base Camp follows the original trail into the Solu-Khumbu region. A newly built road now extends beyond Jiri to Shivalaya, where the trek officially begins. You will encounter the Sherpa people, originally from Tibet, who inhabit the Solu region along the Dudh Kosi River and the Khumbu region above Lukla. Although this trail is still used by porters and pack animals, it is less frequented by trekkers, offering a more authentic and tranquil trekking experience compared to the Lukla route.

Starting from Jiri or Bhandara at an altitude of 1,800 meters, the trek crosses numerous ridges, descends to rivers around 1,500 meters, and ascends passes over 3,000 meters. Rest and acclimatization days are thoughtfully planned at Junbesi (2,680 m, visit the Thubten Chholing Monastery) and Namche Bazaar (3,440 m), the bustling trade hub of the Khumbu region. Beyond Namche, the trail continues to rise with “up and down” sections, offering increasingly dramatic mountain landscapes as night-time temperatures drop. For the adventurous, a small loop via Gokyo Lake and Chola Pass provides a more challenging yet breathtaking route. Vegetation gradually gives way to rock, ice, and glacial scenery as you move higher. You will meet other trekkers on the classic Everest Base Camp trail at Lobuche, Gorak Shep, and along the route to Base Camp. After spending a second night at Gorak Shep, an early morning ascent to Kala Patthar (5,545 m) offers spectacular panoramic views of Everest, Pumori, Lhotse, Nuptse, and the South Col. The descent retraces your route to Namche Bazaar and continues down to Paiya, ending either in Bhandara or Salleri, from where you can take a bus or jeep back to Kathmandu.

The Classic Everest Base Camp Trek is a 24-day adventure that allows you to experience the vibrant Sherpa culture, explore ancient monasteries, and marvel at the Khumbu’s breathtaking scenery. The trek is carefully designed for safety and comfort while offering an immersive experience through forests, rivers, mountain passes, and traditional Sherpa villages. You will walk through luxurious forests, alpine landscapes, and panoramic Himalayan ranges every day, making this journey both adventurous and culturally enriching. This trek is unique because it provides an authentic cultural experience alongside the adventure. You will have the opportunity to interact with Sherpas, taste local foods, learn about their customs, and witness Buddhist practices in monasteries, chortens, and prayer walls. For trekkers seeking a longer, more immersive, and adventurous route to Everest Base Camp, this is the perfect choice.
