Starting from April 1, 2023, the Government of Nepal will enforce a new regulation that prohibits solo treks in high-altitude trekking regions of Nepal. This decision was made by the Nepal Tourism Board on March 4, 2023, in response to the increasing number of accidents and deaths of trekkers who were not accompanied by licensed guides. Henceforth, all free independent trekkers (FITs) must hire licensed guides for their hikes in the Himalayas.
This decision has been made with the primary objective of ensuring the safety and security of trekkers, and the secondary aim of promoting sustainable tourism in the region. As such, the new regulation will apply to all trkeking in Nepal including popular ones like Everest Base Camp Trek, Annapurna Circuit Trek, Langtang Valley trek and Mardi Himal Trek.
To fall in with this new regulation, the Nepal Tourism Board will issue TIMS (Trekkers Information Management Systems) and require licensed guides for solo trekkers. The licensed guides will provide information on local culture, traditions, and geography to ensure the safety of trekkers. Additionally, they will be required to report any incidents that may occur during the hike.
It is worth noting that the new regulation is part of Nepal's wider strategy to promote eco-friendly travel and safeguard its natural resources. While the regulation may limit the options of trekkers who prefer to hike alone, it is crucial to prioritize the safety of all trekkers. In preparation for their visit to Nepal after April 1, 2023, trekkers are advised to make arrangements for hiring licensed guides before embarking on their journey.
